March 3, 2015

When organizing your travel plan to the Galapagos Islands, you must contemplate within your budget that since last Sunday, March 1, 2015, the Transit Control Card (TCC) will costs USD $20. The previous amount paid until Saturday February 28 was USD $10. This payment is made before boarding the flight to the insular province, at the airports of Quito or Guayaquil. That rate was in force since April 28, 2008, a pronouncement managed by the former Council of the Galapagos National Institute (Ingala). Seven years later, the Governing Council of the Special Regime of Galapagos (CGREG) resolved its increase.

The previous transit control card that was used up before February 28, 2015 cost USD $10. The resources that to be collected by the increase will improve migratory control towards the islands.

The Galapagos Transit Control Card (TCC) is an immigration control measure set since April 28, 2008 by INGALA, the former Ecuadorian Governmental Agency that regulated all matters pertaining to the Galapagos Islands. This card is designed to help the migratory control towards the Galapagos Islands, which boomed in the 1990's due to the lifestyle offered by the islands, absence of delinquency, better salaries as a result of tourism. INGALA instituted this card to help keep track of who is entering and leaving the Islands, and to supervise the duration of everyone's stay.

The cost per card is fixed at USD $20 per person, for both Ecuadorian and foreigners, and is paid in cash only at the airport. Certain cruise companies, like Equinoxtours, allow you to prepay these cards along with your cruise.

The resources that to be collected by the increase will be invested in operational costs for the execution of the system of control of the flow of visitors by the Administrative Unit of Qualification and Control of Residence of the Council of Government of the Special Regime of Galápagos, in order to improve migratory control towards the islands. It should be remembered that tourists are considered those who visit the Galapagos Islands to explore populated areas or areas designated by the Galapagos National Park. Also, tourists will not engage in any gainful occupation in the territory and may only remain within a maximum period of 90 days, exceptionally renewable only once. Tourists and passers-by must carry the Transit Control Card issued by the Galápagos Government Council all the time. So also temporary and permanent residents their respective credentials.
