New Galapagos Entry Requirement, the Transit Control Card

November 21, 2009

The Galapagos Transit Control Card (TCC) is an immigration control measure set since April 28, 2008 by INGALA, the former Ecuadorian Governmental Agency that regulated all matters pertaining to the Galapagos Islands. This card is designed to help with migratory control towards the Galapagos Islands, which boomed in the 1990's due to the lifestyle offered by the islands, absence of delinquency, better salaries as a result of tourism. INGALA instituted this card to help keep track of who is entering and leaving the Islands, and to supervise the duration of everyone's stay.

At the Quito or Guayaquil airport, passengers must buy a US$20 Transit Control Card at the Governing Council of Galapagos counter, to be used when entering and leaving the islands. This control card can only be purchased in cash at the mainland airports.

How do I get the Transit Control Card?

You will need to go to the The Governing Council of Galapagos counter before you check in for your Galapagos flight; there you need to show a flight reservation or boarding pass and a valid ID or Passport to obtain your card. The card is issued at the airport and then shown upon entering the Baltra or San Cristobal Airports in the Galapagos. After returning to the mainland, the card is relinquished.

How Much Does the TCC Cost?

The cost per card is fixed at USD $20 per person and is one-time fee. The card is used by the Governing Council of Galapagos for many different purposes, including population monitoring on the islands, conservation and sustainable development projects and long-term planning for all aspects of life on the islands.

At the Galapagos immigration office (at airports in Guayaquil or Quito cities) you need to present a domestic round air ticket, a hotel or cruise reservation; in case you are not staying at a hotel or cruise you will need an invitation letter from a Galapagos resident. These conditions are obligatory, and if not presented passengers will not be allowed in the islands.

How Long Can I Stay in Galapagos and Why is Mandatory?

The maximum time allowed is three months, that is, 90 days. Because there is a maximum time of stay in the archipelago, The TCC prevents a tourist or transient from entering the province if a person has already reached the maximum length of stay allowed by the Law of the Galapagos. Additionally the TCC provides registration at entrance to the province according to the types of residency allowed by the Law of the Galapagos Province and prevents the re-entry of people who have been deported from the province, because of having been in an irregular state according to the Law of the Galapagos.

Who Should Pay for the Card?

The cost per card is paid for both Ecuadorian and foreigners and is paid in cash only at the airport. Certain cruise companies, like Equinoxtours, allow you to prepay these cards along with your cruise. The resolution exempts from the payment of the TCC to Residents of the Islands, military forces members and clerics.
