The Amazon Rainforest: A Global Treasure in Crisis

The Amazon rainforest is one of the most vital ecosystems on Earth. This vast, lush forest stretches across much of the Amazon basin in South America, covering an astounding 7 million square kilometers (2.7 million square miles). Of this area, 5.5 million square kilometers (2.1 million square miles) are lush forest, making it the largest and most biodiverse tropical rainforest on the planet. The Amazon spans nine countries, with Brazil hosting the majority (about 60%), followed by Peru (13%) and Colombia (10%). Other smaller portions are found in Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana. Interestingly, several regions within these countries even carry "Amazonas" in their names.

The Amazon rainforest, a vital lung of our planet, spans 7 million square kilometers across South America, teeming with life and sustaining the Earth's climate and biodiversity.

The Amazon is not only the largest rainforest in the world, but it also houses more than half of the planet's remaining rainforests. The rainforest is home to an incredible 390 billion individual trees across around 16,000 species—making it a true natural wonder.

A Deep History: 55 Million Years of Growth

The roots of the Amazon rainforest stretch back millions of years, likely taking shape during the Eocene era, between 56 and 33.9 million years ago. It flourished in a warm, moist climate that developed as the Atlantic Ocean widened, fostering ideal conditions for tropical growth. Despite facing changing climates, the Amazon has remained mostly untouched by savanna-type biomes, with its dense forests continuing to thrive throughout history.

In fact, after the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs around 66 million years ago, a wetter climate helped the tropical rainforest expand, eventually reaching as far south as 45°. Over the last 34 million years, the region has weathered various climate shifts, with some areas being overtaken by savanna, but the rainforest's resilience has allowed it to continue thriving.

The Sahara's Surprising Contribution

Did you know that the Amazon rainforest owes some of its vitality to dust from the Sahara Desert? Around 56% of the nutrients, specifically phosphorus, that fertilize the Amazon come from the Bodélé depression in Northern Chad, located in the Sahara. Each year, up to 50 million tons of Sahara dust are blown across the Atlantic Ocean, reaching the Amazon basin. This dust helps replenish the phosphorus washed away by frequent rains, supporting the growth of the rainforest.

An invisible bond connects the Sahara and the Amazon—nutrient-rich dust from the desert travels across the Atlantic, nourishing the rainforest and sustaining its incredible biodiversity.

NASA's Calipso satellite has tracked the dust's journey, revealing that, on average, 182 million tons of dust are transported from the Sahara each year. While some of this dust settles in the Atlantic Ocean, a significant portion falls over the Amazon, ensuring that the rainforest continues to flourish. Interestingly, fluctuations in the Sahel—semi-arid land south of the Sahara—can influence the amount of dust reaching the Amazon, with higher rainfall in the Sahel reducing dust levels.

The Amazon's Unmatched Biodiversity

The Amazon rainforest is nothing short of a living marvel, home to the richest variety of species on Earth. As the largest tropical rainforest in the Americas, it hosts one in every ten known species on the planet. The Amazon boasts an astounding array of life, including over 2.5 million insect species, tens of thousands of plants, and roughly 2,000 species of birds and mammals.

To date, scientists have cataloged at least 40,000 plant species, 2,200 fish species, 1,294 bird species, and 427 mammal species, among others. The region is also a haven for invertebrates, with Brazil alone home to over 96,000 species. Additionally, the Amazon contains the highest diversity of tree species, with an estimated 16,000 distinct types of trees.

The rainforest's sheer abundance of life is truly mind-boggling. For instance, just one square kilometer (247 acres) of Amazon rainforest can contain up to 90,790 tons of living plants. And while the rainforest offers countless benefits, it also poses challenges, with various predators and dangerous creatures such as jaguars, anacondas, and electric eels roaming the dense undergrowth. In addition, the region is home to a variety of parasites and disease vectors, including the notorious vampire bats and mosquitoes that carry diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

The Amazon Rainforest at Risk

Despite its vital role in maintaining the planet's ecological balance, the Amazon rainforest is under threat from multiple sources. Deforestation, climate change, and human activity continue to cause significant damage, threatening the region's biodiversity and stability. The Amazon's vast evergreen forests play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide, accounting for roughly 10% of the Earth's terrestrial productivity and holding 10% of its carbon reserves. However, deforestation and degradation could release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, exacerbating global warming.

Many fires were intentionally set to clear land for farming and livestock grazing. If deforestation and climate change continue at this pace, the Amazon's survival could be at risk.

Experts warn that if current deforestation rates and climate change trends continue, the Amazon could become unsustainable. Some climate models predict that by 2100, the rainforest could be almost entirely lost due to reduced rainfall and higher temperatures. These drastic changes would have a severe impact on the region’s ecosystem and the global climate.
